In Mexico, there are a plethora of beach destinations to enjoy, but Mazunte, Oaxaca is undoubtably the best. There are a ton of activities to enjoy with your partner or friends … or, if you’re travelling alone, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with your inner-self. So, get ready for summer and visit Mazunte – Mexico’s best kept secret.

5 reasons why Mazunte is the best destination for summer

  1. Spectacular sunsets

If there is one perfect place to watch unforgettable sunsets or sunrises… is in Punta Cometa, Mazunte; a place free from noise that enjoys serene tranquility. Here you can relax and destress as the sun slowly moves through the sky. The show is so impressive that, in addition to having a gorgeous view of the sea and surrounding nature, it will leave you with a long-lasting feeling of positive energy inside.

To get to Punta Cometa you must walk for 30 minutes through wild terrain, but once you arrive, it will have been worth it.

We recommend: Visit Mermejita beach, an untouched, pristine beach with dark, almost black sand and gorgeous natural views. Has been known to have a strong swell, so caution is advised.

2. Experience releasing turtles

Mazunte is characterized for being an ecological and environmental haven. It is here where you’ll find the Mexican National Turtle Center, a place dedicated to the conservation and releasing of turtles, as well a turtle museum, that boasts 3 of the 8 species of sea turtles in the world, 9 freshwater turtles and 2 terrestrial turtles.

If you’re thing is connecting with nature in more extreme ways then La Ventanilla is ideal for you. This ecological community aims to protect the life of mangroves and conserve their biodiversity. It has an area dedicated to the conservation of turtles and crocodiles, as well as a breeding ground for deer.

We recommend: At La Ventanilla, take the boat tour that runs through the lagoon and ends when you reach an island. During the tour, you will be able to observe mangroves, crocodiles, iguanas, birds and many other endangered species. The tour costs approximately 100 pesos per person.

3. Experience the best mezcal

There is a saying that says “Mezcal for the worst of times, and for the best of times too!”, and why wouldn’t you say it when Mezcal is also said to have been the drink of the gods. It dates back to the pre-Hispanic era, and its elaboration technique has been honed and perfected over the years. Oaxaca is the home of mezcal, and in Mazunte, you will find several bars and restaurants either along the beach, or on the main street, that stock several varieties of this mind-blowing drink.

We recommend: Unwind in the evenings along the many bars, both on the beach and on the main street of Mazunte. Enjoy live music and explore the varieties of Mezcal – just remember to take it pure or “not reduced”. Add a slice of orange and maguey worm-salt to balance the flavors.

4. Eco-friendly destination

Mazunte is characterized for being a place that cares about nature, but apart from the activities it offers surrounding the conservation of turtles, Mazunte also has a Natural Cosmetics Factory. This place offers eco-friendly products such as: Creams, soaps, shampoo and organic oils, all made by local families and craftsmen, making the factory an important source of work for the region. So, by buying items on this site, you not only support the community but also the environment as well.

We recommend: Take a tour of the Mazunte Alternative Craft Market or Mazunte Market. Here you can buy organic products, handicrafts, clothing, earrings and typical foods and delicacies of the region, but get your timing right because it’s only open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

5. Practice a sport: Surfing

On the beach of San Agustinillo, you will find a strong swell and a  killer surf, one that will push you to your limits and provide intense surfing satisfaction. Ask a guide about the currents and rules before you go charging in! If you don’t have a board or general equipment, you can rent it there as well as take private lessons.

Feel the strength of the waves and catch the big one – in that moment you will feel like you never want to leave Mazunte.

We recommend: If you are an extreme adventurer, visit Zicatela beach, which is considered the third best beach in the world for surfing and regularly hosts world surfing competitions. Located only an hour from Mazunte, here you will find professional surfers, who can give you private lessons and tips on this amazing sport, as well as tonnes of great seaside bars and cafes to enjoy pre or post your workout.
